Discover the diverse cultures and cuisines Boston-area restaurants have to offer at Cultural Café, hosted by Hostelling International USA. Estragon Tapas Bar in the South End is the first stop for 2010, on February 2nd. The meal at Estragon will recreate a slice of sunny Madrid - perfect to warm up a cold Boston evening. The staff will also demonstrate a piece of Spanish culture as part of the fun.

We now have a meetup group. To join, go to www.meetup.com/culturalcafe

Where is the Metro? [06 Jan 2010|06:58am]

b0st0n

[irishlibrarian]
They've stopped replenishing the (usually burgeoning) supply of Metros at my T stop and I can't find discarded ones to pilfer from the floor or the seats in the trains either.  Is it gone forever (Nooooooooooooooooo!) or is it just on hiatus? Does anyone know? I've googled, but I haven't found any information.

Edit: Its back! Thank God. My commute is saved.

yoga rec [05 Jan 2010|07:20pm]

[tamalinn]
Hi all,

I'm looking for a yoga studio that caters more to people who are looking for a really good stretching and strengthening program than to those who are interested in meditation and spirituality. I've googled and yelped, but can't locate what I'm looking for: somewhere like this, but in the Boston area. Anyone know of such a place? Thanks.

Needed: ride from NYC to Chestnut Hill, morning of Sunday Jan. 10, for two people and lots of stuff [04 Jan 2010|11:00pm]

My partner and I are going to Cambridge for Arisia (a science fiction convention) and could really use a ride up, since we'll be doing a lot of cooking at a friend's place in Chestnut Hill first and need to bring a bunch of equipment with us. If you happen to be going that way on Sunday the 10th and have room in your car for two people and lots of stuff, please let me know!

(Yes, I know all the dangers of ridesharing; there will be lots and lots of background-checking and talking beforehand and friends with our phone numbers and routes etc.)

EDIT: It's been suggested that I make it explicit that we're happy to cover gas and tolls and provide travel snacks.

Waxing [04 Jan 2010|03:58pm]

[olivetree]
In trying a find a waxer, I checked the memories and came across Priscilla at Skin & Body Works in Davis Sq. Are they still open? I've been trying to call them all day, and all I get is a "full mailbox" notice.

Alternatively, any other recommendations for a good & preferrably cheap bikini/Brazilian waxer?

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) - Opening this Friday! [04 Jan 2010|02:53pm]

b0st0n

[flamingjuly]
"Romeo, Romeo... Who needs a Romeo?" Flat Earth Theatre ponders this and other deep subjects in their upcoming production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield presented January 8th through the 16th.

Come marvel as three thespians condense the entirety of The Bard's works into a single evening. Cheer as the Tudor monarchs play football for the crown, salivate while Titus Andronicus hosts a cooking show, and sob as you finally discover why Hamlet is so emo. Originally produced in 1987, The Complete Works was among the first plays to attempt this momentous feat. This January, Flat Earth will bring this hilarious romp to the Factory Theatre in Boston's Historic South End.

Performances are to be held January 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th, and 16th at 8 PM with a matinee presented Sunday, January 10th at 2 PM. Additionally, there will be a "Pay-What-You-Can" preview held Thursday, January 7th at 8 PM. All shows will be performed at the The Factory Theatre located at 791 Tremont Street, Boston, MA. Tickets are priced at $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or online here.

Mental illness graphic novel in Boston (and area) bookstores [04 Jan 2010|08:11am]

[ mood | calm ]

Hi all,

I've recently published a graphic novel dealing with a teenage girl's struggle to cope with her mom's schizophrenia. Titled the road to god knows..., it's very much a slice of life story and is probably closest in theme to Bryan Talbot's The Tale of One Bad Rat and Nate Powell's Swallow Me Whole. There's a dedicated website for the book at http://trtgk.vonallan.com/ if you'd like to learn a little more. Comicopia in Boston, The Outer Limits in Waltham, and Larry's Comics in Lowell are all carrying my book.

Cover, trailer and whatnot under the cut! )

I had taken a picture to start up a 365 but then didn't  get anything else. So I think I'll start today! It will be on a tumblr due to simplicity. I hope I can do this. As I said I want to do more documenting. In other small and unrelated news, I was glad someone was finally back in town. I apparently like him. Shhh don't tell him, even though I think he knows. I really want to sleep before the sun comes up but tonight (Monday) Mae and I will be going to Double deuce with Kay for Steven's birthday. It should be super fun. Oh I felt joyed tonight, it sounded sarcastic but I suppose he wasn't being sarcastic.

live it. breath it. own it. 2010 you are mine :)

super8 camera/film equipment [04 Jan 2010|12:49am]

Just wondering if anyone has any super8 film gear they want to sell or get rid of. Even if it's busted, I'd be happy to take a look at it and see if it's fixable. I've been keeping an eye on CL, too. But I figured I'd try here, too.

I wrote an app recently that uses the real-time bus GPS information provided by the MBTA to plot buses on a map of an android phone. You can see it here: http://terribleinformation.org/george/bostonbusmap. It's free! but only for android phones.

Hi everyone...checked the rules and hope this is allowed!

I have 4 tickets for sale for the Boston College versus Boston University hockey game (also Northeastern versus New Hampshire women's game) at Fenway on January 8.

The tickets are in the Right Field Grandstand, and as of a couple hours ago, going for $100+ on Stub Hub. The game is sold out (as you can see here: http://www.tickets.com/fenwayhockey/).

I'm looking to sell them for face value ($57.25 each) + shipping.

Anyone interested? Please let a message here or drop me an email at ma2760 at gmail dot com.

Thanks :) And go Bruins! What a win today.

I just had pokemon mac&cheese, and it was delicious. then I decided that while I watch The Invasion for the 20th time this week, I would fill out this survey~

I don't really remember what happened before summer 2009, my years basically are formed by school year, not calendar year )

anyways in honor of The Invasion being the only thing I have watched like ever, here is a sexy picture of Daniel Craig (who is in this movie fyi watch it)

Let me begin with last night. It was so so so much fun :D I saw Anthony Green and Good Old War. Both of which are way adorable. Let me back up a little. Tuesday night went down to pb (Pacific Beach) for not much of a taco tuesday and I got irritated but it turned out okay. I had work till 10 didn't get to pb until 11 something. PB bar and grill was full so mae, nessa, and I headed over to typhoon. lol at Australian guys talking to us but mae and nessa couldn't understand him. So we got in and stayed for a bit but crossed the street to Tavern. I was getting soo annoyed by this time since it was already 12. We only stayed for 30 minutes because it was already 130. Teddy got me a drink so that I would stay with them and not walk down to bars I already like. Mae also got me a drink. Freaking teddy got me an adios and this one was actually good. after we just headed home. well actually i drove to cotixan and made this guy i just met to help me get back home haha.

Yesterday I went to "lunch" with mae at panera and we exchanged presents. She got me a zebra snuggie and I'm wearing it as I am typing this. So we caught up and then she went to work. I went home to rest/ change w/e before going down to soma. So good old war is the cutest! and anthony was just as adorable. he played a lot of new stuff. his encore was about 3 songs! he honestly played for a good hour and a half (encore included). So i went out back and like no one was there? everyone had just left. So anthony came out for 2 seconds :( and i didn't get a picture so anthony's tour manager comes to fetch him and brings over this guitar and they say something so he walks away but tells him to come back. he said he wasn't going to play so he handed this girl the guitar. LIKE WTF. it could've been me. but oh well the show was fun. next time i'm wearing different shoes. I guess thats all i have to say for now. maybe I'll do a year in a glance soonish. haha.
